In this post we look at another service offered by New Geosciences Limited - independent peer review.
What is an independent peer review?
An independent peer review is undertaken by an external reviewer on behalf of the author of a report, the party that commissioned a report, or another stakeholder who has in interest in the findings. A review may be undertaken on behalf of the authoring organisation where they don't have the capacity or capability to review the report themselves, or perhaps where the subject of the report is of significant importance or public interest. The organisation that commissioned a report may wish to have a peer review undertaken in order to gain a second opinion, or to understand if any further work is required as a result of a gap analysis. Other interested parties may include those who are likely to be impacted by a development, for example, and wish to understand the potential outcomes and if there are other viable alternatives to a proposal.
Are there different types of review?
We typically offer two types of review - a sense check and an in depth technical review. As part of a sense check, we will review the documentation to enable us to fully understand the project and comment on whether the conclusions and recommendations made are justified and robust. As part of an in depth review, we will look at all data, including desk study information, ground investigation data, laboratory testing results, etc., in order to identify potential issues that may have impacted the findings of the report.
Who undertakes the review?
All reviews are undertaken by a Chartered geologist and registered ground engineering professional with significant relevant experience. Our service is bound by the code of conduct of both the Geological Society of London and the Institution of Civil Engineers.
How long do they take?
The time taken for a review depends on the type of review required and volume of material to be reviewed, but we aim to provide a review within a week of instruction.
How much does it cost?
The cost of a review varies depending on the project, so it's best to get in touch to discuss your requirements so that we can provide an accurate fee proposal.
How do I find out more?
